Killer Whale Rising by mistressjera-stock

Imagine spending the rest of your life in a bathtub
for someone else's entertainment

Orcas are being stolen from the wild, and traded around the world between parks for breeding to perpetuate the non-beneficial purpose of human entertainment. Not conservation efforts. Not educational opportunities for the general public. But entertainment. Orcas are highly intelligent social animals being separated from their families and forced to perform unnatural tricks in tanks comparable in whale:tank size to that of backyard swimming pools.

Corky, an orca captured in 1961, is still captive to this day, and certainly has no chance to survive if returned to the wild. In 1993, Nightline visited SeaWorld San Diego, where Corky lives, and played the calls of her family to her. All orcas in the tank responded, but none as strongly as Corky, who shuddered violently while the tape was being played. Efforts are being made to petition SeaWorld to retire her to a large ocean pen, where she may someday be able to come in contact with her family and live more naturally for the rest of her life. Despite Corky closing in on the average age of death in captive orcas, SeaWorld is unlikely to retire an animal who is making them so much money.

What can you do?

  • Tell your friends and families not to visit or support Marine Mammal Parks like Miami Seaquarium, Six Flags, and SeaWorld.
  • Call your representatives and elected officials and tell them not to support marine mammal captivity. To locate your government officials, click here.
  • Purchase a copy of David Kirby's book "Death at SeaWorld: Shamu and the Dark Side of Killer Whales in Captivity"- the groundbreaking scientific thriller that exposes the dark side of SeaWorld. Read it, then share with family and friends. You can purchase a copy at The Orca Project Store (additional purchase options for download and overseas can be found here). Also, follow David as he continues to write about the captivity debate at his website "Death at SeaWorld".
  • Purchase a copy of the DVD of Gabriela Cowperthwaite's stunning documentary BLACKFISH which tells the story of Tilikum, a performing killer whale that killed several people while in captivity and the history and controversy surrounding orca captivity. You can order a copy at The Orca Project Store or visit Blackfishmovie.com for more information. Watch the movie then share it with family and friends, or host a screening party.
  • Contact SeaWorld today! Tell them how you feel. Email, write, call and send messages to their Facebook page. Fill up their inboxes and switchboards! Click here for SeaWorld's "contact us" page, or email them at corp.community@seaworld.com or corp.communications@seaworld.com and let them know how you feel about orcas in captivity. (You will be blocked or banned from their Facebook page if you are vulgar. Be civil in your request for them to stop captive orca breeding and orca captivity. However, for SeaWorld, there is little difference between being vulgar and speaking the truth for these whales. History has shown that you will more than likely be blocked or comments deleted, regardless, for any posts that do not praise their work.)
  • Visit Voice of the Orcas (VOTO): Former SeaWorld trainers (featured in the documentary film BLACKFISH) share a common philosophy and provide a voice to those without through constructive dialogue, multimedia presentations, testimonials and interviews.
  • Visit and support Orca Network and SaveLolita.com to learn more about the lone orca Lolita at Miami Seaquarium and the comprehensive plan to retire her to a sea pen.
  • Boycott and spread the word about parks and facilities that currently house or have previously housed captive orcas.
